Mary Ann Mengel

Aspiring Artist

Mary Ann Mengel, a Pennsylvania artist, has always been drawn to personal expression as a visual artist and maker. In highschool she was awarded a Scholastic Gold Key in art, and a scholarship to the Pennsylvania Governor’s School of the Arts for visual arts. With a bachelor of fine arts degree in communication design and a master's degree in instructional technology, her professional career moved away from fine arts to include stints in graphic design and commercial photography. She continued to occasionally paint and she designed and marketed custom calligraphic wedding certificates and needlework patterns of local churches. Now, recently retired from a career as an instructional multimedia designer for a university, she is immersed full-time in painting, working primarily in oil. Her work, inspired by the Impressionists and Fauve painters, reimagines small moments using color and expressive brushwork, Mengel also upcycles old furniture with original hand-painted folk art designs inspired by historical imagery of the Pennsylvania Dutch culture.
