Elizabeth Gartner Howe

Accomplished Artist

Elizabeth Gartner Howe lives on the shores of Lake Superior in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in the US and has been a working artist for over 35 years. Her interest lies in capturing the moment when a landscape goes from something she enjoys looking at, to a place she wants to go. Often not just a physical place of reference, but vision in her mind’s eye, of the edge of a cloud, down the path, beyond the fence, or across the field. She knows it is time to paint when it draws her in. Working primarily in oils both in studio and Plein Air she often works big, having spent many years as a muralist and creating public art installations. Though she fuels off the impact working large can create she also enjoys the quiet intimacy of a small piece and its ability to bring the viewer into a more focused experience. Using broad strokes, her color palette is a mix of soft hues and bright pops of color. Her joy is that the viewer feels the temperature of the air, the breeze blowing or the wetness of the water in her work as she takes them along to the places she wants to go.
